Breaking Free from Fear and Lies

Updated: May 6

Have you ever felt like you were holding yourself back from what God has called you to do? Like there was something inside you that knows you were made for more, but fear, doubt, or even words spoken over you in the past made you shrink instead of step forward. Maybe it's a voice from childhood. A label. A generational pattern. Or maybe it's just the overwhelming fear of what people might think if you fully obeyed God.

This kind of suppression isn’t always loud or obvious. Sometimes it looks like staying silent when you were meant to speak, staying small when God has asked you to lead Big, or walking in circles when you were created to run.

But here’s the truth: God has not called you to stay hidden. He’s called you to live boldly, walk in freedom, and carry His light into the world. The enemy wants to dim your light with fear, lies, and shame but Jesus came to break every chain.

You were created with purpose. God knit you together in your mother’s womb and placed within you a calling that only you can fulfill. Every lie spoken over you, whether by others, by family, or even by yourself must bow to the truth of God’s Word. It’s time to identify what has kept you silent.

It’s time to take the lid off. It’s time to walk boldly not because you feel ready, but because He is faithful.

If you’re ready to begin the journey of breaking free, here are three ways we often suppress our God-given identity and how to overcome them in the truth of Christ.

“The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.” — Proverbs 29:25

1. Words Spoken Over Us

Words carry weight, especially the ones spoken over us in childhood or during vulnerable seasons. Maybe someone told you that you were too much, not enough, or that you'd never amount to anything. Over time, these words can become ceilings over our calling.

But God never spoke those words over you. He speaks life, not limitation.

“The tongue has the power of life and death...” — Proverbs 18:21

God’s Word overrides every false label. What He says about you is final.

2. Lies We Believed

Not every wound comes from others—sometimes we believe lies all on our own. We internalize messages like:

  • “You’re not qualified.”

  • “God could never use someone like me.”

  • “If I step out, I’ll fail.”

These lies, left unchallenged, convince us to stay small. But we serve a Big God who uses the unqualified and equips those He calls.

“You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.” — 1 Corinthians 7:23

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7

3. Generational Patterns

Sometimes the things holding us back have been in our families for generations. Insecurity, silence, poverty mindsets, or fear-based thinking can be passed down like inheritance.

What wasn’t healed in one generation often shows up in the next.

But Jesus came to break every chain. You are not bound by your bloodline; you are redeemed by His.

“He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.” — Isaiah 61:1

How to Begin Breaking Free

  1. Identify the Lie

Write down any false belief that may be holding you back. Who told you that you weren’t enough? What did you start believing that God never said?

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32

  2. Renounce Generational Patterns

Bring any family cycles or strongholds before God.

Declare that they no longer have authority over your life.

  3. Replace Lies with Truth

Use God’s Word to tear down every falsehood. Make a list of truths about your identity in Christ.

  4. Take One Bold Step

Whether it’s starting a ministry, applying for a new role, praying out loud, or simply showing up fully, do it! Even if you’re scared. Obedience builds courage.

Final Encouragement

You don’t have to stay small. You don’t need to wait until you feel ready. And you absolutely don’t need to keep dimming your light to make others comfortable.

You were made for more. And God is inviting you to take the lid off.

So today, speak what He tells you to speak. Stand where He calls you to stand. Move forward even if your knees shake.

You are not disqualified. You are not too late. You are not forgotten.

You are chosen.

Prayer

Father,

Thank You that I am Yours. Thank You for the calling You’ve placed on my life, even when I don’t fully understand it. I confess that I’ve allowed fear, shame, lies, and generational strongholds to hold me back. But today, I surrender those things to You. I declare that I am no longer a slave to fear or the opinions of man. I am Your child, called, chosen, and equipped.

Help me take the lid off, walk in boldness, and trust You with every step.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
